Updated: Mar 31, 2022

Do you not feel pukish after having raw beetroot or are you even normal? Raw beets have to be on the list of the most distasteful things ever.

But the flip side- It is SO nutritious. It is not without a reason that it is called the “Powerhouse of Minerals”. Amongst other things:

1. Beetroot can reduce high blood pressure

Beetroot contains nitrates, which helps in increasing our body’s level of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps our blood vessels to expand, increasing the blood flow to our heart and in turn, lowering the blood pressure.

2. Helps in better workouts and faster recovery

Due to the increased oxygen circulating to our muscles, due to the increased nitrates in our body, we're able to perform at a certain level for longer.

One study found that the stamina-boosting properties of drinking beetroot juice could actually help you exercise for longer periods.

3. Helps fight inflammation

Betalains possess a number of anti-inflammatory properties. Beets contain high levels of these pigments.

This benefits fighting many conditions like obesity, heart disease, liver disease, and cancer.

A study done on people with high blood pressure found that consuming 8.5 ounces (250 ml) of beet juice for 2 weeks significantly reduced inflammation significantly.

4. Improves digestive health

Beetroots are one of the richest sources of glutamine, an amino acid essential to the health and maintenance of our gut. They’re also rich in fiber, which as well as supporting bowel function helps support the environment of the gut and the beneficial bacteria that reside there.

So, coming back to the bad taste of the beetroot. There has to be a substitute right?
